Kanata - A lost hamlet

Kanatal is a beautiful little town located about 70 km from the capital city Dehradun, Uttarakhand and is perched at an altitude of about 2,600m. The city offers a mesmerizing view of snow clad Himalayan peaks of Garhwal region.

Years before the area had a natural lake and hence got its name Kanatal. It is still a secure and best place in Uttarakhand for tourist and can be easily approachable by road. The area is not overcrowded and unpolluted unlike some of the leading tourist destinations and has natural exquisiteness at its peak.

The climate of Kanatal is as soothing as the temperature remains below 25 degrees in summer and goes upon negative 5 degrees in winters. One must visit the place in winters so as to experience the powdery snow spread over the hills and meadows. The area offers the best hide out for a picnic and camping in the nearby forest and fields.

Although Kanatal is a small hamlet in which one can just an unwind. Although there are a few points of interest which one must check off from their list:

Surkanda Devi Temple – Surkand Devi is at an altitude of 3030m above the sea level. An easy trek of 2kms will lead to a temple of Goddess Sati. The temple has a massive ques of people in an important festival. Turk and Devi have been ideally placed at a point which provides scenic views which present the vista of Himalayas and beyond. The place is tranquility redefined.

Kodia Jungle – You have to go into the wild with Kodia forest. It’s an easy 2km hike from Kanatal on the Kanatal-Chamba route. The path is filled with rhododendron, pine and deodar trees. If you are lucky you might be able to see musk deer, wild boar, Ghoralkakar,  etc. and many species of birds

The weather in Kantal changes during the different times of the month. In summers (April – June) Kanatal the temperature varies from 25 to 38 degrees Celsius. In the monsoon season, Kanatal receives heavy showers. In winters the temperature ranges from 1 to 15 degrees celsius.

Excursions From Kanatal

Tehri Dam: The dam is built on the confluence of River Bhagirathi and Bhilangna and make for an enjoyable visit. While at New Tehri, the Pant Research Institute is worth visit. The New Tehri gives an eagle view of the largest man-made the lake of Uttarakhand.

Mussoorie: Popularly known as the Queen of the hills, Mussoorie is 37 km away from Kanatal and is situated at an altitude of 2,300 m above sea level. The major attraction of Mussoorie is the Gun Hill, offers a panoramic view of Himalayan peaks including Bandarpunch, Gangotri and its sister peaks, Pithwara and Srikantha. Mussoorie is home to several stunning waterfalls including the Jharipani Falls, Kempty Falls and Bhatta Falls. Apart from its landscapes, the place offers a delicious variety of food.

Chamba: About 16 km away from Kanatal, Chamba is located at an elevation of 1,600 m above sea level. This untouched and uncommercialised place offers a spectacular view of the Garhwal Himalayan range and the Bhagirathi River. The area is also famous for its festivals including Sui Mata and Minjar.

Dhanaulti:It is 12 km from Kanatal. Dhanaulti is perched at an astounding elevation of 2,286 meters. The place is famous for its panoramic views of Majestic Himalayas.

Shivpuri: Shivpuri is about 75 km from Kanatal. This place is famous for white water rafting in the River Ganga. Shivpuri is most convenient and popular destination for rafting and is about 300 km from Delhi. The best time to go is from March to May and then from September to October. However, during monsoon season, it remains close for the public.
